Lee Health Wellness Center
Comments from Hurricane Irma

"Thank you so much for reaching out to see how our facilities are doing! We had been out of power until yesterday and unable to open after the storm had passed through. We have been very fortunate to not have sustained any major damage to the building or the equipment, even with a near direct hit. We spent the day yesterday with a few of our staff who had remained in the area cleaning up and preparing to open our doors back up.  Some of our staff have been dealing with flooding, debris, trees, no power and no running water at their homes through the week, but with the great preparation of the state, power is being restored little by little. We have been able to open our doors as of noon today with limited amenities to members and have been opening our facility to many Lee Health employees who are still without power or water that need showers or just a moment of quietness and sense of normalcy. We are providing them with warm showers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, water and other necessities they may be without. We have also taken our group exercise instructors out into the acute care facilities for yoga and other classes for employees who have had to deal with the stress of working on the disaster teams. Out of our struggles we have worked on ways to improve strength and support of the community and health system.Thank you again for checking in."

"I can’t thank MFA enough for the kind and thoughtful email, we are very appreciative to your support. The JCA lead by our executive director Myron Flagler conducted an amazing level I hurricane preparation last Friday 9/8/1977 , as a result of that we have suffered minimum damage and were able to get back to our normal operational capacity by Tue 9/12/17 at 2 pm, this opening was very helpful to our community since it helped a lot members from our community to come and shower and relax in a cool place it will be a while before JEA could fix all the power lines. Our facility and most of our staff homes made it through the storm safely but our city had devastating floods. We highly appreciate your support and we will let you know for sure if we needed any help from your association God bless you all!"

Comments from Hurricane Irma

"Savannah fared better with Irma than with Matthew. However, there was more flooding this time and power outages were common. Three of my staff along with myself were on the “A” Team that stayed round the clock at the hospital from Sat. at 7:00 am until Tuesday evening to serve staff only.  FitnessOne is located on the hospital campus and was open from 5:00 am until midnight (sometime 1:00 in the morning) for staff stress management/relaxation and for staff showers.  We provided much needed services for our team members as the clinical areas ran 2 shifts and those off-duty needed a distraction.  During the hours of 7:00 pm -11:00 pm, there were as at least 10 people waiting for shower at all times.  We only had housekeeping services between 1:00 am and 4:00 am so our FitnessOne team cleaned the showers between TMs utilization and cleaned the facility throughout the day/night.  It was a very humbling and rewarding experience to serve our Team Members."

Florida Hospital Celebration Health
Comments from Hurricane Irma

"We faired OK in Celebration, Florida. Trees down and some roof damage but all and all the hospital held up during the storm. We never lost power which was good! Several of our hospitals had to operate on generators for a couple of days. The fitness center provided childcare for the clinical staff so our storm teams could stay in-house to care for our patients. The fitness center staff did an amazing job providing activities for the children during the day and night-time supervision while they slept. We also provided shower facilities for the clinical staff.  It was a long but rewarding 48 hours for the team. Thank you MFA for your thoughts. It was a vicious storm so I feel fortunate we experienced minimal damage."

In the past 6 months we have been able to bring free health and fitness programs to our community through wellness screenings in our County's libraries as well as a free Beach Yoga class once a month. These programs have been wildly successful, as we have been able to reach upwards of 50-70 people at a time. Instead of expecting people to come to our facility, we are able to bring the benefits of health and fitness to them in other locations around the community and people love it! They are always asking for more and we aim to provide as much as we can! Once a month, the fitness coordinators visit one of the County Libraries to provide free blood pressure, body fat, weight, height, and circumference screenings. By going out into the community we are able to spread the word of health, but also encourage people to come back into the facility to improve their numbers.

The last Wednesday of every month from March through October we are hosting a free beach yoga class! On average, 50 participants show up each month with their towels and yoga mats to spend an hour stretching, moving, breathing, relaxing and enjoying nature with us!
Beach Yoga has grown from a pilot program of 20 people last year, to a monthly series attracting crowds of upwards of 70 people in 2015. Participants are of all ages, from kids and their parents, to teens and seniors. Everyone can benefit from the practice of yoga, and we encourage everyone to attend, free of charge.

Annette entered Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness walking in with a cane; 100lbs heavier knowing she needed to change and join the center. Today, we are celebrating her accomplishments with a 100 Pounds Lost Party at the Center in her honor. She is walking without the cane, she is using the stairs, and she participates in Silver Sneakers, Group Groove, and Aqua Aerobics classes. Annette spent endless hours at Healthtrax making use of all that was available to her as she built her strength and endurance. She built strength using our trainer supervised Express Circuit, and did as much as she could on the recumbent bike and in the pool. During those days she built rapport with staff and fellow members, while closely studying all the trainers. Every time she came in it seemed like she was doing something she could not the week before. I haven’t met anyone quicker to give a great compliment to a complete stranger, and she has taught me the wonderful power in those positive comments, and how important it is to regularly give genuine, heartfelt praise to others. Annette always talks about how she felt welcomed into our “gym” environment and how Healthtrax became her second family and home away from home for this 100 pound journey. - Forever inspired as a trainer & as a person, HENRI

Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks General Hospital – Canada

Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks General Hospital member testimonial :
“I joined the Wellness Institute in August of 1999. My pear-shaped body and I had never been athletically inclined. I even did anything I could to get out of going to gym class. Needless to say, I avoided any physical activity completely. My change of heart came after surviving breast cancer. I felt that I had been given a second chance and it was time that I did something outside of my comfort zone to improve my health.  Two months after my surgery, I joined Wellness. I found that my stamina was non-existent: Five minutes into an aerobics class and I would have to leave the class. I had more success in the aqua size classes (which were also a first for me) and slowly my stamina increased. Initially, the one activity that helped me the most was Tai Chi. I had never heard of Tai Chi, but when I saw people moving in slow motion on the gym floor, it looked like something that I could actually do! The instructor was a very patient man and worked with us at our speed, encouraging us at every turn. I found an inner peace as I practiced alongside my fellow participants. I didn't worry if my hands or feet were in the perfect position. I just went with the flow. Once you feel success, it's easier to try something else. My next new experience was a women's weight lifting class, teaching us the correct body positions to be in when lifting weights. From there I started using all of the machines and more of the scheduled classes.  The extra bonus to going to Wellness is meeting and talking to others. The consultants are very approachable and helpful. It looks like I'll be here for as long as I can come.  -Renee- Wellness Institute member    Several months before I joined the Wellness Institute my son passed away. As is usual I was put on anti-depressants to help me with the grief. My only comfort was sleeping and dreaming of running and running. Going nowhere … just running. I happened to mention this to a friend of mine who worked at Seven Oaks Hospital. The next day she brought me a guest pass for the Wellness. She said “Instead of dreaming of running why don’t you try the real thing.” A few days later I decide to give it a try. I ran and ran and cried and ran some more. It was exactly what I needed. One month after joining the Wellness I was able to stop all medication. 12 years later I not only run but do aerobics, weights and yoga. Being able to workout at the Wellness was the best thing I could ever do to help me manage my grief. Thank you Wellness!!  -Kim- Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks General Member
