The Grandmother Proving You Can Get Fit at Any Age

By the age of 75, Shirley Webb was struggling to pick herself up out of chairs and out of bed. Being an independent person, she did not wish to spend her life getting weaker, finding it more difficult to get up or move around, so with her granddaughter in tow, she joined a fitness center and began weightlifting. Three years later, at the age of 78, Shirley became a world record holder after deadlifting 225 pounds.


She is not alone. There are many inspirational seniors out there proving that you do not have to have a lifetime of sport behind you in order to start working out, and start competing. Two of the fastest 100 meter runners over 70, a German and an Irishman, never ran before their 60s. The same goes for one of the best senior marathon runners from Britain who never so much as jogged until her late 50s. The important thing for all of them is that they started and saw immediate improvements in their health.


How to Succeed No Matter Your Age

Whether young or old, it’s never too late to try to get fit or to play sports. All you need is the right attitude and environment to get you going. As Shirley and the others prove, you can make extraordinary progress within a short time, but even if you don’t, a little is far better than nothing. Here’s some top tips for making the right approach to starting your fitness journey:


1. Find a Workout Buddy

As Shirley proves, your workout buddy does not have to be the same age or anywhere close. Her granddaughter is decades younger and much fitter, but they helped each other out to success.


2. Find a Fitness Center and Trainer Who Get You

You need them to understand you and your unique needs. Patience is also required and you want a fitness center that welcomes all no matter your age or shape. It might take some time to get it right, but keep trying because a trainer who can develop a program which fits you perfectly is going to help you far more in the long-term.


3. Be Realistic with Your Goals

You will not be Shirley within 3 months and you will not be Usain Bolt, ever. However, be realistic about where you are now and enjoy any progress you make. Sometimes you’ll go fast and sometimes slow. You might plateau at some point, but don’t let it bring you down. Try to make it fun and remember the fitness and health benefits any improvement makes to you.
