Marla Richmond, MS, Memorial Education Award
Marla Richmond, MS, was an internationally
recognized expert in exercise science. She was an author, researcher,
international presenter, and expert resource for media. A practicing
professional for more than 22 years, Marla was acclaimed worldwide as one of
the most innovative teachers of her time. Marla presented her exciting
and innovative educational approach to medical professionals, fitness
professionals, physical and health educators, and national and international
organizations, schools, libraries, and institutions of higher learning
She used her degree and her continuing thirst for
knowledge to build an amazing career, writing about and teaching the subject of
exercise physiology about which she was so passionate. Marla’s practice as a clinical
exercise physiologist brought her clients with needs ranging from a simple
fitness program to those living with difficult health issues. She
had clients whose goal may have been to win a race and others who simply wished
to have the strength to stand up and dance at their child’s wedding. Marla always saw the best in her clients and
helped them find the best in themselves. In this fashion, she created a fiercely loyal following
of clients, many of whom stayed with her throughout her 20 years of practice.
On May 31, 2010, Marla's family, her family of clients,
her many colleagues throughout the fitness industry, the many who attended her
lectures and who read the words of her books, articles, newspaper columns and
other materials, and those that have yet to be introduced to her work, lost a
very special person, wife, mother, teacher, collaborator and friend. Click here to read more.
"When I think of Marla Richmond, the word passion
comes to mind. Marla had an incredible
and unmistakable zest for life and for almost anything that crossed her
path. She wrapped herself around
everything and everybody with the full strength of her love and wisdom. She compromised for no one. No obstacle was too great to overcome in
order to ensure that her lesson was heard and understood."
