Meet Alan Loyd, FACHE, FMFA
Say hi to Alan Loyd, Executive Director at Beacon Health & Fitness in Indiana with facilities in Granger, South Bend, and Elkhart. Alan has been with Beacon Health & Fitness for 12 years. He has a BA from Indiana State University and an MBA from Baker College. Alan serves on the MFA Education Committee, as the Central Region Chair and as a Second Examiner for facility certifications.
Most recently, Alan was given the prestigious Hank Boerner Pioneer Award at the MFA Annual Conference. The Hank Boerner Pioneer Award is presented to an individual who has significantly advanced the medical fitness industry.
We caught up with Alan recently and here is what he had to say.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy working and connecting with such a wide range of employees—from those just starting their careers to highly skilled, experienced professionals. It’s just such a wonderful experience, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.
What one piece of advice would you give to those just coming into this field of medical fitness?
Just say, “Yes!” Eventually, it’ll be important to establish some boundaries, but at the start, say yes to the opportunities that will naturally pop up—say yes to teaching that class, taking on some new responsibilities at your club, or picking up that extra client. Learn all you can about the total operations of your facility—people dialed in to the “big picture” are invaluable, don’t silo yourself or your thinking.
What did your facility gain by becoming certified by the Medical Fitness Association?
Certification was transformative for us. Or, I should say, the process of becoming certified was transformative. It made us better, with clear standards to aspire to. All the way through our organization, our team members know we stand for something bigger, something better.
Are you involved in any charity/community work?
Our two boys are active in Cub Scouts, and I have a lot of fun volunteering with them. Actually, people in my family have been volunteering in Scouting since the 1950’s so it’s a big part of our lives. Don’t tell anyone, but I still secretly enjoy getting patches when we go camping!
Thank you, Alan, for all you do for MFA and congratulations on your Hank Boerner Pioneer Award!
