Meet Miki Martin, PT, MBA
Say hi to Miki Martin! Miki is the Director at LIFT Wellness Center in Jackson, TN. She has been with her facility for the past 8 years.
Miki has a Bachelor’s of Physical Therapy from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (1993) and an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Bethel University. As a member of the Medical Fitness Association, Miki serves as the TN State Captain and on the SEMFA Regional Board (thanks Miki!).
We caught up with Miki recently and here is what she had to say.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The relationships with the members.
What led you to choose this field?
As a physical therapist for our healthcare system for over 20 years, I felt that the healthcare system should be leading the way in preventative medicine through fitness. When asked to interview for the Director position of a brand new Wellness Center, I could not pass up the opportunity to be involved. I was excited to marry my background and training in physical therapy to my passion for fitness and share that with our community.
What one piece of advice would you give to those just coming into this field of medical fitness?
You can never become complacent. There is no such thing as standing still. You are either moving forward or falling behind. The fitness industry is always evolving and we have to keep up with the trends while never losing sight of our primary focus – improving the health of our communities by helping individuals develop healthy exercise and nutrition habits.
Why did you become a member of the Medical Fitness Association?
The resources and contacts that the Medical Fitness Association provide were invaluable to me when we were planning to open our facility, so it only made sense to be a member of this Association. Before we opened our doors in 2013, I knew that I wanted to get our facility certified. To me, that would represent what really sets us apart from other facilities in our area. The MFA was so helpful in our operations and programming planning before we opened our doors and that really helped us to be ahead of the game when we were preparing for [MFA] Certification.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy road cycling (especially group rides), running, a bit of racing, and just hanging out with my husband. (I am working to improve my swimming technique so that I can enjoy that someday, too!)
Thank you, Miki and we’re glad you don’t stand still!
