We caught up with Sheri recently and here's what she had to say...
MFA: What do you enjoy most about your work?
The people we serve and the team I get to serve with day in and day out.
MFA: What has been your favorite/most successful initiative at your fitness/wellness center?
Revitalizing our water fitness classes! We added the Aqua Body Strong Boards class, which has been totally unique to our community. Added several higher intensity cardio and strength shallow end classes to have options for those looking for a more challenging workout in the water. Empowered my team to have fun! Bring back theme days, costumes, great playlists…add their personal style to their classes. Our water class attendance in 3 years has grown by over 4,000 participants!
MFA: What led you to choose this field?
I was a 3-sport athlete in high school and wanted a career where I could help others become and stay active. I am a people person and truly love helping others find joy in the journey of getting healthy. I discovered water aerobics through a college class and continued to be involved with aquatics throughout my career. I have a special interest in working with the older adult population and helping them stay active, healthy and independent for as long as possible.
MFA: What one piece of advice would you give to those just coming into this field of medical fitness?
While statistics and numbers are definitely important, focusing on building relationships with the members we serve is vital for making a true impact on the communities we live in. Expose yourself to as many different areas of fitness and wellness as possible. Aquatics often scares people away but when you add water to the mix, the possibilities are endless for our members. I often joke that water workouts are the fountain of youth.
MFA: You're at an MFA Certified Facility. How do you see the MFA Certification difference?
I am blessed to work with the first ever Medical Fitness Association Certified Facility. The level of professionalism, expertise and knowledge expected of an MFA Certified Facility is in our DNA. We know no other way to operate and it is awesome!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I am a huge Ohio State Buckeye Football Fan and love cheering on our Hometown Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. I have a 15-year old son who I enjoy hanging out with as well as spending time with my family and friends. I love gardening, canning and cooking. It is my love language passed down from my Mom and Grandma. I love the beach and go as often as I can!
Thank you, Sheri, for sharing your story, your words of wisdom and the work that you do to keep people healthy! And...thank you for sharing these fun photos!
