Surgical (and all medical staff) suffer from high rates of musculoskeletal injuries due to poor OR ergonomics and an almost complete lack of physical training for the rigors of the position/job. By considering the medical staff as athletes with unique team roles, we can determine the physical needs of the various positions and prepare them accordingly. We will discuss how to approach a needs analysis, what training protocols may be appropriate, and how to get staff to buy in to preventative exercises.

Learning Objectives
1. Approaching/considering medical staff and their duties as athletes/athletic endeavors

2. Needs analysis for medical staff

3. Differentiating inter-/intra-op training opportunities for injury prevention

Speaker: Gil Spitz, Exercise Physiologist with the Medical ICU Team at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center

Originally a classical musician, Gil Spitz shifted his focus to ergonomics and preventative exercise to help musicians with repetitive motion injuries. He furthered his expertise with an MS in Exercise Physiology, researching optimized training for first responders.

In 2019, he joined the Medical ICU team at Baylor/St. Luke's Medical Center, developing and enacting exercise plans for medically compromised patients. Since 2021, he has been with the Liver Transplant Program,  implementing a hospital-wide method for assessing transplant patients' physical suitability, providing post-transplant follow-up, and developing a virtual pre-habilitation program to improve outcomes.

Along with his official duties, he has worked with various surgical teams, prescribing both inter- and intra-operative exercise programs to help prevent injuries in OR staff.
