While members join fitness facilities full of enthusiasm and motivated to work out the reality is that many do not develop the behaviors required to maintain a routine of regular exercise. Joining with lofty goals but little real understanding of what’s actually required to start and maintain a routine of regular exercise these members become frustrated and disillusioned and stop attending very quickly.

While the research on Exercise Adherence is extensive and has produced a range of models to follow it is often difficult to apply these frameworks to fitness facilities based on the resources available. This webinar will focus off the approaches that are easiest to intergrade into a health facility that will deliver the biggest impact.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify where behavioral change approaches can be deployed to improve exercise adherence and increase retention
2. Recognize the value of simple conversational techniques to build member confidence and competence
3. Link behaviors to clinical measures to provide evidence of effectiveness

Presenter: Dr. Paul Bedford, Director of the Retention Guru, Ltd.

The wild world of gut-immune-brain connections is like a three-way telephone call between our stomach, immune system, and brain. The domino effect within our body can trigger the immune system, then the brain, and ultimately throws our metabolism out of whack. Cortisol, our stress hormone and sugar regulation take center stage in this metabolic failure. This chaotic dance can tip the scales towards weight gain or make shedding those pounds a real struggle.

In this presentation, we will explore the concept of, “What happens in the gut doesn't just stay in the gut; it can mess with our immunity and brainpower.” Funky stuff in the gut like inflammation or cranky bacteria can throw our whole system off balance, causing issues from mood swings to memory blips. We will dive deep into this gut drama, aiming to bring back the zen by fixing gut health as a top priority. In this lecture, you'll uncover the secrets to boost gut health, fix gut issues, and whip immune systems and metabolism back into shape! Let's get those systems harmonizing like a well-oiled machine!

People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are motivated to improve their fitness. A 2020 Special Olympics survey found that among people with ID who belonged to a gym (pre-COVID), most visited the facility regularly, with 74% reporting attendance at least twice per week. In 2023 alone, over 478,000 Special Olympics athletes participated in fitness programming globally. However, people with ID face many barriers to participation in fitness programming, such as lack of access and social support. Moreover, people with ID are more likely to experience greater health challenges, such as higher prevalence of chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease compared to people without intellectual disability. In fact, 65% of Special Olympics athletes who completed a health screening through Special Olympics were identified as overweight or obese over the past 5 years, while 35.6% have low bone density.

Medical fitness centers can uniquely address the holistic care of people with ID to improve their health given the dedicated focus on prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related disease, illness, and injury. As such, this session will help attendees to first understand the current health and fitness of people with ID. Additionally, attendees will understand factors to consider in program design as well as communication to aid the successful delivery of fitness programming for people with ID. Further, attendees will receive training on how to use fitness assessments and other resources for people with ID in the areas of endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance to accommodate a wide range of mobility levels. As medical fitness professionals, attendees are uniquely primed to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Together, we can ameliorate the health disparities experienced by people with ID.

Does the name on the side of your fitness equipment matter? Maybe, but brand name should be one of the last things that is decided upon when choosing fitness equipment. Start with Who?, What?, Where?, When?, and Why?

-Who will be using the equipment?
-What are their goals and short-term objectives?
-Where will this equipment be located and how much user space needs to be allocated around the equipment?
-When will equipment need to be replaced? What is the expected lifespan of each type of equipment?
-Why should I choose a specific brand? What are the important features and benefits associated with each piece of equipment?

We will explore the critical aspects of fitness equipment selection as well as gym layout and design. These elements are essential for creating a safe, efficient, and inspiring fitness environment that meets the diverse needs of your members. Brands and quality matter but formulating a generic list of fitness equipment based on form and function, is the best place to start. Rethinking equipment training zones will be discussed. We know that providing equipment that is appropriately spaced and ensures a good flow can make a fitness/wellness center feel more inviting. Initial impressions are important for potential members but will also support retention efforts and keep members safe. Once equipment is delivered and installed, regular attention to a few key elements will not only reduce risk but contribute to equipment lifespan.

All participants will leave our discussion with a number of no-cost resources to support efforts in creating a unique gym experience.

Learning Objectives
1. Participants will be able to justify capital fitness equipment expenditures and formulate a 2–3-year plan to optimize and prioritize capital dollars spent on fitness equipment.
2. Participants will be able to assess their current facility layout and space allocation, then generate an updated Zone Plan.
